Cinnamon Cardamom Oatmeal
So much of my health and wellness routine is rooted in Ayurveda (the science of life). In fact, it is what I based my Glow From Within guide around. This is because Ayurveda tells us to live in harmony with our own body, mind and nature. In Ayurveda, spices are a key addition to meals. Spices have the ability to heal and balance the body in different ways.
Oatmeal is one of my favorite ways to add spices, especially cinnamon and cardamom. These two spices are glow from within powerhouses!
Cinnamon has the ability to repair the gut lining, regulate blood sugar levels and support good bacteria growth in the gut. Cardamom has the ability to reduce inflammation in the gut and reduce bloating.
I love adding them to oatmeal because oatmeal itself offers amazing gut support. Plus, oatmeal is delicious and quick to whip up (making it ideal for busy weekday mama mornings!).
What you need (serves 2):
1 cup organic rolled oats
a pinch of salt
2 tbsp chia seeds
2 tbsp hempseed (optional to add more protein)
A few generous pinches of Ceylon cinnamon (about ½ tsp)
A couple pinches of ground cardamom
1/4 tsp vanilla bean powder or 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 3/4- 2 cups vanilla plant milk (unsweetened or only sweetened with dates)
1 ripe mashed banana
Directions: Heat a saucepan over low heat. Add all of the ingredients. Cook for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. When finished the oats should be thick, soft and mushy. Test the oats for doneness before removing from heat. Some oats like stone ground oats require more time to cook.
Tip: If liquid is fully absorbed before the oats are fully cooked just gradually add a little more plant milk until the oats are cooked.
