Date And Almond Butter Chip Smoothie (supportive for pregnancy)
When it comes to nourishing my body in pregnancy I aim to focus on:
nutrient dense foods
gut supportive foods
labor/postpartum supporting foods
foods that are naturally energizing
This smoothie does all of that for me, especially towards the end of the third trimester since it contains an adequate amount of dates. Dates in pregnancy have been shown to not just be a great source of carbs for energy but also for ripening the cervix. Some say that date can help to reduce the need for medical intervention and shorten the early stage of labor.
This smoothie is one of my favorite ways to get in those dates starting at 36 weeks. It contains fiber, protein and healthy fats which help to make this an energizing and balanced smoothie. It contains foods like almond butter and flax meal which are supportive during pregnancy and beyond.
Enjoy this smoothie as an energizing snack, post workout meal or as an energizing start to your day.
What you need:
8-10 oz plant based milk
1 serving of vanilla unsweetened protein powder (I use this superfood blend here)
1 1/2 tbsp flax meal
2 tbsp almond butter
2-3 pitted medjool dates
ice to thicken
1 small frozen banana
1 ½ tbsp cacao nibs (optional)
Directions: Add the plant based milk, protein powder, flax meal, almond butter, dates, banana and ice to a blender and blend until smooth. At the last 15 seconds add the cacao nibs. Pour and enjoy!
